A fairytale with puppets, dance and theatre

The Calamar Teatro company presents ‘La cama voladora’ (‘the flying bed’) on Saturday at Topic

The Calamar Teatro company will be offering the play ‘La Cama Voladora’ as part of the School Program on Friday, and for the general public on Saturday. It is a production that takes us to the world of fairytales. Dance, theatre and puppets are the artistic components that are used to tell a story based on a traditional tale from Iceland.

Especially recommended for the age group three /four years to adult, the music of the play was specifically composed by Germán Díaz. It features all the ingredients of traditional, Nordic fairytales as we know them. Natalia Wirton, the play’s director thinks it is “a very sweet and poetic traditional fairytale”.

Among the different puppetry techniques used in this play we find: bunraku, shadow puppetry and dolls, with the puppeteer behind them. “It is the actor splitting into two” Natalia adds. ‘La cama voladora’ is the story of a prince who gets lost in the forest. An evil troll, a haunted swan, the egg of life, magic words and a flying bed are other ingredients in the play.

The Calamar Teatro team likes fairytales because, according to the director of the play, “both the message and the metaphors in them are positive and interesting for children´s education”. And she quotes Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland: “The most interesting thing about fairytales is that they transmit a sense of life to children, which is about maturing, and enjoying life, overcoming difficulties and improving everyday. At the beginning of ‘La cama voladora’ a little boy gets lost in the forest and starts on the path of initiation in life there”.

Calamar Teatro is a company from Valladolid who also work with artists from Madrid and Cataluña. They specialize in dance, puppetry and theatre for children. “We’d like to leave our own imprint: a series of poetic plays that pay special attention to aesthetics and to the soundtrack” Natalia Wirton maintains.
