World Premier of Mimaia Company at Topic
On the 6th of December Mimaia will be offering the premiere of the play ‘Adiós, Bienvenida’ (‘Good bye, welcome’), the result of a creative residency at Topic. The aim of this play, in the words of the authors, is to show that there is no need for sad farewells, as we all have to face them in our daily life. “Even the time of birth itself is a farewell” says Dora Cantero, director of the company based in Barcelona.
Dora is responsible for the staging, direction and interpretation as well as for the script writing and music. On this occasion she is working with Nina Ledergerber, from Switzerland, who is in charge of building the stage-set, puppet manipulation and playing the music. “Apart from singing, I play the Timple (a traditional string instrument from the Canary Islands), the musical saw and the accordion’’, Nina explains.
‘Adiós, Bienvenida’ (‘Good bye, welcome’) is the result of a year’s work, in which the three months’ residency at Topic has been especially significant. They knew from the beginning that they wanted to work on this show outside Barcelona, and given that Dora knew about Titirijai festival and Topic, they thought of applying for the Creation Residency. ‘We spoke to the directors of the Centre and introduced them to our project; they liked it and… here we are’ Ledergerber points out.
The premiere of the play at Topic is the perfect end to the Puppet Festival and it is addressed to a family audience. Afterwards they are planning to show it at the Teatro Circo in Murcia, and repeat it again at Topic in July, to coincide with the Summer School for the Unión Internacional de la Marioneta (Unima) –International Puppet Union-, which will take place at the International Puppet Centre in Tolosa. Mimaia is a word children use in some areas of the Spanish region of Levante, when they play hide-and-seek, to make themselves safe.
Mimaia Teatro started in 2008 aiming to create ‘that refuge, a place where we can save the child within ourselves’ Dona explains. Her first play was “Arbequina” which has been included in this year’s Titirijai program.
Mimaia focuses on the researching puppetry and object theatre. The company moved to Barcelona in 2010 and met Nina Ledergerber: musician, puppeteer and plastic artist, who became part of the company. Throughout 2010, Mimaia Teatro performed in clubs and venues in Barcelona, adapting the show to the particular features of each venue and creating a close link with the audience as a main objective, in order to forge a more direct communication between the artists and the audience.
